Lots of people want to do the DIY to modify a printer for direct to garment printing, DTG printing or digital flatbed printing T-shirt printing in the world. Since now, 80% of DTG printer company’s DTG printer are modified from Epson,  with difference printing size, printing resolution and printing color.  Such as focus digital technology, DTG digital, Ana-jet, T-Jet, Flex-Jet, Melco… All of them except focus digital sell their printers as expensive as a brand new Benz. So our focus digital want to help all users can do it your self to get a DIY printer for you own using.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


The modify steps:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1.  Modify the paper loading system.

 

 

 

First must Lead out the drive signal from the Epson original paper load motor, then magnify the working power to driver a bigger step motor or servo motor. Then move the motor to a special did flatbed, to driver the flatbed motion by the ball screw, belt or steel wire. In one word, just change the paper load motor to Y axis motor to control the flatbed or printer move backward and forward.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The paper loading facility is no use after modified, you can remove it and cut out the paper load roller. But must make sure it will not effect the carriage moving.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2.      Modify all paper checking sensors.

 

 

 

The printer paper checking sensor will start to check if the printer load paper after you power on a printer, so you need to remove the sensor to the flatbed on the back and front to let the sensor recognize the flatbed instead of the paper. The printer will working unless it checked the flatbed.  For easy to install, you can use the proximity switch or U file switch to replace  the original paper sensor.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For a higher precision can use the single chips electronic board to processing this work, the single chips can send a fake signal to the printer mainboard to let the printer recognize the flatbed, and the single chips can control the printer online, offline, printing copies, X,Y,Z axis motion, it is very useful when you want to modify the printer for all project printing. Such as Focus Rainbow-Jet, Power-Jet, Genius-Jet

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3.      Modify the ink supply system.

As the modified printer not used for print paper with dye ink,  almost print with direct to garment ink or the eco solvent ink, so the original ink supply system is not using. Need to shield this ink chips recognize function first, you can enter the printer with service model to click off all inks functuion. Then install a CISS continues ink supply system to replace the original cartridges, also you will need the ink chips reset decoder to reset the chips for recycle using but no need to buy the original cartridges after the ink is running out. You also need to adjust the height of the ink supply system to make sure the print head without lack ink or leak ink. Also you can modify to the bulk ink supply system such as Focus newest Butterfly-Jet, it use the bulk ink supply system can easy to refill ink, reset ink chips, exchange ink and wash the inks.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 4.   Modify the printer setting,

 

 

 

When you start power on the printer, the printer will start to check paper, ink, belt…. All system, because the printer was modified, so you need to click off some setting on the printer, you can ask for focus digital technology support team to get a setting list of each items.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 5.   Modify the printing channel

 

 

 

If you want to print with white ink to the dark garments, you need to divide the printer color model to CMYK+X*W, so you need to take the RIP software for process the image, also for solve out the problem of white ink settling, you need to modify the ink supply system to circulation and add the automatic shaking system and other facility, you can buy this all suitcase from focus digital technology.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 6.   Modify the control system.

 

 

 

You can choose the single chips electronic board to control the print for online, offline, forward, backward, also you can use the PLC control system go with servo motor,  the PLC controller can control each process of printer separately, compare with this two method, the first one is costless the second one is more high precision and stable. Such as Focus Fly-Jet, Dragonfly-Jet, Ark-Jet and Royal-Jet are use the PLC control and servo motor.

 

  7.   Modify the X axis carriage motion

The modify precision include the X. Y. Z axis motion precision.  The X axis is the carriage moving system, it is original Epson without modify, now almost all inkjet printers are use the encode film to control the carriage motion. So this precision is enough.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  8.   Modify the Y axis

 

 

 

The Y axis is the flatbed motion system, it can be controlled by Epson original paper load motor, modified step motor and servo motor, compare with them, the servo motor is the most stable and highest precision for motion. After choose the motion method, then you need to modify the lead type, you can use belt, ball screw, leaner rail, steel wire to lead the flatbed motion

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  9.   Modify the Z axis

 

 

 

The Z axis is the up and down motion of the flatbed, you need to use 4 T type ball screw to make sure the flatbed surface in a same level, or it will be scratch the print head, also you need to mount a up and down limit sensor to control the motion distance.


 10,  Chose the flatbed motion type.

There are two motion method can be modified, first one is printer not move but the flatbed move( as Focus digital Power-Jet), another one is flatbed not move but top printer move( as Focus digital Dragonfly-Jet), If by the first one, you need to make the flatbed longer, the exact size depend on the distance between the both slider on the ball screw. This method better for use the printing length small than 1meter, if long than 1 meter, the return motion will cost more time, also the motion precision will be reduce as the belt or ball screw will be have a little bend, the second modify method almost used for the table size bigger than 1 meter, so the total flatbed can shorter than the first one, also it can start printing on any position so no need to back to the front to print.
